Liposuction

Sometimes, regular visits to the gym and the latest diet can't give you the ideal body shape you've always dreamed of. Liposuction is designed to get rid of those stubborn areas of fat – giving you a new shape, a new you.

If you are of a normal body weight but find you have stubborn areas of fat, liposuction offers a solution. It is a form of surgery designed to create a balanced, proportionate body by permanently removing fat cells from problem areas, resulting in a real improvement in your body shape. It aims to reduce those areas where diet and exercise programmes no longer work.

A small incision is made in the specified area, and a thin tube inserted which is connected to a vacuum pump. The surgeon will manoeuvre the tube to break up and suck away unwanted fat cells. The incisions will be stitched, and bandaged and you will need to wear a pressure garment following the operation.

Liposuction can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. You will need to be prepared to stay in hospital overnight, and to take a week off work to recover in comfort at home. When it's time for you to leave hospital, you will be given a follow up appointment with your consultant, and/or the dressing clinic for the removal of any stitches, together with any medication prescribed. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a few weeks after liposuction.

There will be scarring where the incisions were made, but this will fade significantly with time. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common but temporary, and painkillers can help to ease any discomfort.

Small areas of liposuction can be performed in the minor operations room in Outpatients.
