At The McIndoe Centre, we have a team of orthopaedic surgeons who have chosen to concentrate specifically on foot and ankle problems. We do not currently offer joint replacements or complex spinal surgery; however, our team of specialists are happy to provide consultations at our hospital for these procedures.
Why you might need foot and ankle surgery
A patient can require foot and ankle surgery if they have suffered ligament damage, severe arthritis and other injuries that cannot be resolved by other forms of treatment. Such injuries are common in those that participate in a lot of sporting activities.
What are the benefits of foot and ankle surgery?
When a patient requires foot or ankle surgery, it is because they have a condition or have suffered an injury that will not heal correctly without an operation.
Some of the benefits include:
- People living with Arthritis can find walking easier and more comfortable
- Ability to return to sporting activities
- Correction of deformities and damage to bones, ligaments or muscles
What does foot and ankle surgery involve?
The type of surgery that you undergo is entirely dependent on your specific condition and requirements. In this case, a consultant will be best placed to advise on the surgery that is right for you and to discuss your personal needs.
Most operations are performed under a general anaesthetic, while a local anaesthetic is also possible with some surgeries. After undergoing a procedure, some complications can include stiffness and limited movement in the joint, although this does not necessarily mean you are less mobile.
Major operations can take as many as three to six months to fully recover from, depending on the condition and its severity. A plaster cast may be required, particularly in cases of arthritis, for a number of weeks based on your surgeon’s recommendations.
Treatment costs will vary according to your unique needs. The full pricing options will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.
