Achilles Tendon Repair & Reconstruction

Achilles Tendon Repair & Reconstruction

Orthopaedic Surgery | Foot & Ankle

What Does The Surgery Involve?

Achilles tendon rupture is when the tendon has become torn usually behind the ankle. Surgery involves sewing the tendon back together, but the precise type of surgery needed will depend on the severity of the rupture. Your surgeon will discuss the best operation for you.

Surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic with a nerve block and takes around an hour. You will need to stay in hospital overnight.

What Are The Benefits Of This Surgery?

The aim of the surgery is that you can return to the activities you did before the surgery, but this does depend on a number of factors that your surgeon will discuss with you.

Recovery After Surgery

After surgery, you will have to wear a cast or walking boot for between six to 12 weeks and at first, this will have to be positioned to keep the foot pointed downward as the tendon heals. You will need to take between four to 16 weeks off work, depending on your job.

What Are The Possible Complications Of This Surgery?

As with all surgical procedures, there can be some risks. At the McIndoe Centre, we do everything we can to minimise the risk of complications. Your surgeon will talk to you about any possible complications before you decide to have your operation. There is a very small risk of further rupture, but this is considerably less than for non-surgical treatment of the injury.
