Entropion and Ectropion Repair

Both entropion and ectropion are conditions which affect the eyelid. An entropion is caused by the eyelid turning in and making the eyelashes rub against the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped outer layer located at the front the eye). An ectropion is when the eyelid turns out so that it does not make contact with the eye at all.

Why You Might Need Entropion And Ectropion Repair

You may require surgery in the event that your eyelid folds inwards, causing discomfort as the eyelashes rub against and irritate the cornea. Equally, surgery may also be required when the eyelid folds outwards; disrupting the drainage of tears and making the eye sore and red - increasing the possibility of contracting conjunctivitis.

What Does Entropion And Ectropion Repair Involve?

The entropion or ectropion repair is usually performed while under a local anaesthetic, which is in the form of eye drops or an injection into the eyelid. There are other options available too, including general anaesthetic.

The procedure itself typically takes around half an hour to an hour, but this can depend on whether both eyes need to be performed on. The surgeon may remove tiny parts of the eyelids if the tissue has become slackened.

In the case of tightened skin causing the issue, the consultant will use a skin graft to correct the problem area. Any cuts will be stitched and sealed following surgery.

Recovery

It is likely that you could be able to leave a few hours after the operation, although the consultant may recommend that you stay in the hospital overnight.

You should wait until your eye has fully recovered before participating in any strenuous activities; this is usually around 24 hours after leaving the hospital.
