Patients take time to evaluate cosmetic surgery options

More patients could be weighing up the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery before making a life changing decision, according to surgeons at the world renowned McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead.

New figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that in 2016 the number of Britons undergoing cosmetic surgery dropped by 40% compared to a record-breaking number of more than 51,000 in 2015.

However, surgeons at The McIndoe Centre, which specialises in plastic and reconstructive surgery, see the drop in numbers as positive.

Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Baljit Dheansa said: “Although numbers dropped last year, we don’t see this as negative. Cosmetic surgery is not something people should rush into and we believe that fewer numbers indicate greater consideration is being given before embarking on surgery. Cosmetic surgery is never a quick fix and has to be undertaken for the correct reasons.”

He stressed: “Anyone thinking about cosmetic surgery should always take professional advice. At McIndoe, all our surgeons are members of BAAPS, which is the only organisation dedicated to the safety and education in cosmetic surgery.”

Mr Dheansea added: “Last year was an exceptional year in terms of uncertainty we faced because of Brexit and people put off making big decisions in many aspects of life so it’s not surprising that certain trends were reversed. Cosmetic surgery was just one example where this was seen.”

BAAPS, which represents the vast majority of NHS-trained consultant plastic surgeons in private practice, revealed that the number of cosmetic surgical procedures for women and men was fewer than 31,000. Breast augmentation remained the most popular procedure overall with nearly 8,000 women undergoing surgery in 2016.
