If your upper and lower teeth aren’t properly aligned, a Le Fort 1 Osteotomy may be required to address the issue.

The surgery can help to restore the correct alignment of teeth. It may also be required if your upper teeth have rooted into the upper jaw bone. In this instance, the osteotomy is necessary because the alignment of the teeth can’t be improved without changing the position of the upper jaw.

Why might you need a Le Fort 1 Osteotomy?

Improperly aligned teeth can lead to further issues and complications with both dentistry and general health problems. A Le Fort 1 Osteotomy may be the best way to treat these issues.

What are the benefits of a Le Fort 1 Osteotomy?

Aligning the teeth through an osteotomy can bring a range of benefits. These include:

  • Treating existing dental issues
  • Aligning the jaw for comfort and ease of movement
  • Addressing irregularities of the lower face

What does a Le Fort 1 Osteotomy involve?

A Le Fort 1 Osteotomy procedure is performed to change the position of the upper jaw to ensure the teeth are aligned. The surgeon will make cuts inside the mouth, above the upper teeth. Maintaining the blood supply is an essential part of the procedure. The upper jaw will then be separated before being moved into the correct position using plates and screws. The cartilage which divides the nostrils may also need trimming to prevent the nose from becoming blocked. Finally, the surgeon will apply dissolving stitches to the cuts.

The treatment is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes about an hour to complete. Local anaesthetic injections may be required after surgery to reduce pain and swelling.

There are always risks associated with surgical procedures. Specific complications of a Le Fort 1 Osteotomy include:

  • Blood loss, requiring a blood transfusion
  • Infection of the wound
  • Issues caused by the metal plates shifting or loosening

Recovery Time

You should expect to remain in the hospital for up to three days post-surgery. A diet of liquids or soft foods will be necessary for the first few days until your surgeon recommends returning to your normal diet.
