Scar revision can help improve the appearance of scars caused by previous surgery, burns or trauma. At The McIndoe Centre, our specialist consultants are dedicated to finding the best treatment to suit your individual needs.

If you suffer from self-confidence issues due to any unsightly scars that may have been as a result of surgery, burns or trauma, scar revision treatment could be the ideal solution for you.

A patient will seek scar revision treatment in order to improve the appearance of unsightly scars.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Improved appearance of scars
  • Renewed confidence in appearance
  • Minor scarring can be treated without surgical treatment

Depending on the size of the scar, it may be possible for treatment to take place in the outpatient department in the minor operations room. The appearance of red, itchy and unsightly scars can be improved by steroid injection, silicone gel tape or surgical excision.

Steroid injection can be performed under local anaesthetic and may require a few injections over time to improve the appearance.

Silicone gel tape is applied to the scar and worn for virtually 24 hours a day. It is removed for washing/bathing, and each piece lasts a few weeks.

Surgical excision can be performed under local anaesthetic - stitches will need to be removed (if not dissolving) and a pressure garment may be required. In the case of large scars, serial excision may be required.

Following surgical excision, it is common to experience swelling, discoloration and discomfort for one to two weeks post-surgery. After this, the skin will continue to heal, and scarring will fade over several weeks. The scar will need moisturising (with a bland moisturiser) and massaging to help with the final result.

Guide prices are available here. It is important to note that these prices are just a guide and treatment costs will vary according to your unique needs.
