Mr Hamada is a highly trained and experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Cornea Surgeon with a special interest in cornea, cataract and laser and lens refractive surgeries in adults and children. With over 25 years in ophthalmology, he is a pioneer in managing corneal diseases in children. As one of the few eye surgeons worldwide with the educational, academic, and clinical expertise, Mr Hamada excels in handling complex paediatric corneal cases. 

Mr Hamada holds advanced qualifications in Cataract and Refractive surgery, including a Master’s Degree from Ulster University and fellowship training at prestigious international eye centres. He has performed more than 20,000 cataract surgeries, many involving intricate cases that were referred for his expertise and skills.

In his surgical practice, Mr Hamada has completed more than 1,000 grafts, covering procedures such as Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP), Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK), and Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK) including DSEK and DMEK. He has operated on children as young as six-month-old and older children, showcasing his proficiency in delicate paediatric surgeries. His expertise extends to secondary IOLs (scleral sutured, iris-clip, and AC-IOL), anterior segment reconstruction, iridoplasty, and glaucoma filtration surgeries.  

Moreover, Mr Hamada has successfully managed highly complex ocular surface diseases with advanced techniques like amniotic membrane transplantation, stem cell transplantation, and ocular surface reconstruction.  

In addition to his outstanding surgical skills, Mr Hamada is renowned for his genuine empathy and compassion, which consistently put patients at ease. His accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans, even for the most complex cases, have earned him numerous glowing reviews. Mr Hamada has completed higher specialist training at reputable national and international centres of excellence. After completing his general ophthalmic surgical training, he undertook five years of sub-specialist training with fellowships in cataract, corneal and refractive surgery. Additionally, he is fellowship trained in managing corneal diseases in children from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Currently, Mr Hamada is a consultant eye surgeon at the world-famous Corneoplastic Unit and Eye Bank at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Trust where he manages complex referrals of corneal and eye surfaces diseases in adults and children from all around the UK.

Research 

His passion for research is exemplified by his role as a leading investigator in the UK for presbyopia treatment using corneal inlays that measures only microns (Allotex). His other ongoing research involves: 

  • Examining the effectiveness of Cyclosporine 0,1% in severe keratitis (Santen sponsored Research) 
  • Leading the world’s largest adult group in Corneal Neurotisation 
  • Assessing Quality of Life (QoL) measures after corneal cross-linking 
  • Spearheading a Screening Programme for paediatric keratoconus 
  • Investigating outcomes of mouth-to-eye Epithelial Transplantation (MEET) 
  • Defining success in the management of the blepharokeratoconjuctivitis: evaluating activity and damage. 

Through each project, Mr Hamada is actively influencing the future of ophthalmology with his dedication and innovative contributions.
