Liposuction Surgery for Men

Otherwise known as liposculpture, liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed throughout Europe. Last year, liposuction was ranked one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the UK, with over 2,300 people electing to have the surgery, 270 being men.

While liposuction is commonly associated with women, the procedure can also be performed on men. Almost every liposuction procedure follows the same routine, however, there is one difference when treating men. The primary difference regarding liposuction for men is the targeted areas. For example, common target areas for women include the hips and thighs. Men, on the other hand, may choose to focus specifically on the stomach.

Each liposuction treatment aims to improve your physical appearance by removing stubborn fat pockets from areas where it’s notoriously difficult to shift fat. This can be done using several different liposuction techniques, but selecting the appropriate treatment course is a decision to be made between you and your surgical consultant.

Liposuction for men is not an alternative to weight loss, nor should it be seen as a cure for obesity. Post-surgery, your surgeon will advise you to adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle to ensure you get the most out of your liposuction procedure.

What does Liposuction for Men Involve?

All surgical treatments at The McIndoe Centre begin by arranging a consultation with your chosen consultant. During your consultation, your surgical consultant will explain the procedure and your treatment journey. You will be free to ask any questions surrounding your liposuction surgery and we encourage all patients to ask as many questions as they can.

Your consultant will then mark out sections of the area to help guide the surgery, give you an indication of the areas where the surgery will take place, and roughly how you can expect to look after surgery.

During surgery, your consultant will begin by making incisions in the targeted areas in order to insert the cannula. The cannula is then used to help break up fat deposits within these targeted areas and a vacuum is used to remove the fat. Your incisions are then sewn up and left to heal.

Note: Each patient will experience a different liposuction treatment depending on their individual requirements. No liposuction treatment is the same and no single technique works for all patients.

How Long Does Liposuction for Men Take?

Every liposuction treatment is tailored to the patient’s specific requirements, so the time taken in surgery depends on the extent of the treatment. For example, if the surgery is more complex and more fat deposits need to be removed, it will likely take longer. Typically, liposuction treatments for men take between one and three hours. This will be discussed in more detail during your consultation.

How Much is Liposuction for Men?

Again, due to the nature of each patient’s unique procedures, prices of liposuction vary. Typically, liposuction costs range between £2,000 - £5,000. However, a full price will be given during your consultation.

Choosing your Surgeon

Choosing your surgeon is one of the most important parts of your liposuction journey. Liposuction procedures are very personal, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with your decision and your chosen surgeon.

It is unlikely that your liposuction procedure will be covered by your insurance as it is seen as an elective surgery. However, The McIndoe Centre is able to help with financing your treatment.

All consultants at The McIndoe Centre are fully accredited and are on the specialist register of the General Medical Council. A number of our consultants who specialise in plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery are also members of leading professional bodies such as BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons) or BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons).

After surgery, support and compression bandages will be applied to the relevant areas. This is to ensure that your skin makes a swift recovery and any bruising or swelling post-surgery is looked after. Full recovery varies between patients but typically, you can expect to see your full results around the six-month mark.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction for Men?

As with any liposuction surgery, the aim is to leave the targeted area looking slimmer and healthier. Choosing an experienced surgeon will contribute towards a better result. All of our surgical consultants are fully accredited and are on the specialist register of the General Medical Council. You can find out more about our surgeons by visiting the consultants' page.

Remember: Liposuction cannot be used to treat or remove cellulite, stretch-marks, used as a treatment to tackle obesity or a weight-loss alternative. If your surgeon believes you are not an appropriate candidate for a liposuction procedure due to any of these reasons, they have the right to refuse to operate.

Think carefully before having cosmetic surgery

Never feel rushed or pressured into giving your consent. Be wary of surgeons or staff who try to convince you to go ahead. Take plenty of time to make your decision.

We strongly advise you take at least two weeks after your consultation with the surgeon performing the procedure to think things through before surgery.
