Face Lift Surgery

The natural process of aging tends to mean that our jawlines slacken, our eyelids fold and smile lines deepen. Renew your confidence and self-esteem with a natural, fresher look.

What Does This Surgery Involve?

There are several different techniques used by our consultants at The McIndoe Centre to perform a facelift. The most common type of facelift is called a SMAS. During this procedure, your surgeon will make an incision around the ear. From there, the skin can be lifted slightly and tightened. Muscles and tissue can be removed or manipulated to achieve the desired effect.

Usually, a hospital stay between two and three nights is required. The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic and will take between two and three hours.

Although the procedure is long, it can be performed with almost any other procedure, the most common being a brow lift and eyelid reduction.

Recovery After Surgery

When it’s time for you to leave the hospital, you will be given a follow-up appointment with your consultant and a date for any stitches that need to be removed. You should feel more like yourself after four weeks. Your face will feel puffy and there is usually some bruising on the face and neck. You should be able to return to work after two weeks, depending on your type of work. Regular exercise is great to help you build up your return back to normal activities, but always ask your consultant for advice.

Are There Any Alternatives to Facelift Surgery?

A facelift is the most effective way of reducing sagging. If you have fine wrinkles, your surgeon will assess you for anti-wrinkle injections. Deeper wrinkles can be smoothed out with fillers or implants.

Droopy eyebrows or eyelids can sometimes be treated more effectively with brow lifts or blepharoplasty which is a procedure to remove the excess skin and fat from the eyelids.

Planning your long-term goals with your consultant, and researching the procedure, will reinforce whether surgery is the right option for you.Surgery is not without risk so you should be sure in your reasons for wanting to go ahead. It is important that your expectations are realistic and that the advantages to you always outweigh the risk of surgery.

Take this checklist to your consultation with the surgeon performing the procedure. Discuss each topic with your surgeon to help you make the decision that is right for you before having surgery.

Think carefully before having cosmetic surgery

Never feel rushed or pressured into giving your consent. Be wary of surgeons or staff who try to convince you to go ahead. Take plenty of time to make your decision.

We strongly advise you take at least two weeks after your consultation with the surgeon performing the procedure to think things through before surgery.
