Cyst and Lipoma Removal

Although most sebaceous cysts and lipomas are relatively small and benign, some do grow larger. This can lead to pain or soreness, resulting in a need for removal. Some cysts and lipomas also grow in places where they are easily noticeable. In these cases, removal may be chosen to help restore body confidence.

What Does Sebaceous Cyst And Lipoma Removal Involve?

The cyst or lipoma will be removed and sutured through direct closure. Following the procedure, If they aren’t dissolving, the sutures will then be removed according to the site of the wound. As a rough guide, the back is 10-14 days, the arm is 5-7 days, and the face is 3-5 days. In addition, skin coloured surgical tape is applied for a minimum of 2 weeks to help support the scar.

Most cysts and lesions can be removed in the minor operations room of the outpatient’s department. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and will take approximately 30 minutes.

As with all surgical procedures, there can be some risks. At The McIndoe Centre, we do everything we can to minimise risk of complications. Your surgeon will talk to you about any possible specific complications before you decide to have your operation.

Recovery After Surgery

Following the procedure, minimal discomfort may be experienced, although this can easily be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers. Bathing is allowed, as long as the dressings and wound site are kept dry.

You will need to massage and moisturise the scar with a bland moisturiser for at least a month after surgery. Similarly, sun protection should be worn for 18-24 months as the affected area will be at an increased risk of sunburn.
